LiveJournal Major Notes: Notes, Tweaks, Bug Kills, LJ_Cares! [Nov. 12th, 2009|01:53 pm]

news

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5 for improved visual design!
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

Papered in postcards

A couple of weeks ago, we asked you to send in postcards to surround us with LiveJournal community. Thanks for coming through! We've received postcards all the way from Germany, Finland, and Canada and from all over the US, including Texas, Florida, Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Indiana, Hawaii, and Oklahoma just to name just a handful. We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

Photos of the week

We have more dazzling images posted by talented LiveJournal photographers from around the world. We're hoping to span the entire globe, so please continue posting and tagging. Of course, you can also sit back and enjoy the view at [info]lj_photophile.

You can see a sample of this week's gorgeous photos and check out spotlight communities and awesome user content after the jump!

Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT [Nov. 11th, 2009|02:00 pm]

lj_maintenance

[dwell]
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Music purists of a different calibre. [Nov. 11th, 2009|07:40 am]

sarah_pills
[Current Music |"Raven (Dirty Disco Youth Remix)"-Proxy]

You built up a world of magic
Because your real life is tragic.

Yesterday, after work I decided to head over to Starbucks where I waited for Nicolas to finish his dental appointment. Bought myself a cappucino and smoked a few whilst reading up an article on how House music has revolutionized our society today on Juice.
Finished my cappucino. And Nicolas was still getting his teeth checked. So I decided to go to Borders and read the latest issue of Rolling Stones. As I was just getting interested in the Editor's note on Marijuana legalization, Kart called me and said she was outside. So I met up with her and Shaun and pigged out on Shaun's onion rings (As usual). Nicolas finally came shortly after and we all waited for Jac and Natasha to show up to fulfill our Tuesday night regimen. Our Starbucks session consisted of a lot of squabbling, music, table finger banging (Not as kinky as it sounds), Paramore, random fact sharing and more Burger King thanks to Natasha (Thousand apologies for the "fries" stealing).
Left for Cuscaden after trashing the place with our incessant noise pollution and met up with the rest. Many familiar faces infested the packed vicinity, which normally should be a good thing... But not when most of them are people you just don't want to deal with right now. Nonetheless, I managed to make the best out of my night and it worked. Beer multiplied and chicken wings came by the dozen, I was at a lost for words. Literally. The night was ending and I was exhausted.
But of course, Kristian wouldn't take my exhaustion as an answer and refused to allow me to rot at home. So, Kris, Karmillah, Grace, Venus and I walked over to Orchard Towers to a place called Naughty Girl. Surprisingly, as much as I despise Orchard Towers and the sleazy atmosphere it accentuates, the club was alright. They played house music (?) and the bands were so much better than any other local mainstream band I've ever heard.
Jugs after jugs came down and soon, I was wasted.
Came home with Karmillah and apparently, recorded some strange videos...Watch out Facebookers! You're in for a treat.

On another note, waking up to a pounding headache with last night's make up smudged all over, noticing you're wearing nothing but your underwear and trying to recollect the pieces of your amazing but drunken night does get old. Damn you $10 beer!

As Good As It Gets [Nov. 11th, 2009|07:33 am]

[Current Music |"Playing God"-Paramore]

If God's the game that you're playing
Well, we must get more acquainted
Because it has to be so lonely... to be the only one who's holy
It's just my humble opinion, but it's one that I believe in
You don't deserve a point of view, if the only thing you see is you.

You don't have to believe me
But the way I, way I see it
Next time you point a finger
I might have to bend it back
And break it, break it off
Next time you point a finger...
I'll point you to the mirror

this one's for you [Nov. 10th, 2009|10:47 pm]

you know how we alllll have that one person in our lives who out-cools everyone else?
for me, it was always uncle felix.
exuberant, dark, wild, and always involved in something scandalous.
the 'one' in every family.
he came down after 4 years and im finding him addictive allll over again.
i loveeee people who can laugh at themselves
and more than that, i love people who can talk about pain and hurt and how screwed up we are without even flinching.
there are no boundaries when i have a conversation with this man, and thats what i LOVE the most.
but uncle felix is best only in limited quantities
which is what i love about him even more.
if there's something about him that fascinates me to no end, it would be how he sucks everyone in with his clever words.  but people like him always have it bad.
the irresponsible, disorganised, careless part of me (all three thirds) loves the fact that he doesnt give a rat's ass about anything.
and if there's one thing i take back every.single.time i see him, its that we're never too damn old to do anything.
'i'm done working. i want to play'

Audio Cure [Nov. 9th, 2009|09:18 pm]

sarah_pills
[Current Music |"Human Hands"-The Bowerbuds]

After a long and tiring weekend, Monday blues have slowly crept in. Been doing absolutely nothing but couch hogging, Facebook surfing, Juice reading and blog updating. Dreading another long day at the theatre tomorrow.
Other than that, I've found a new addiction to Animal Collective and The Bowerbuds thanks to Olivia. Major Limewire overload.
Their lyrics just have this surprising way of soothing me, and their tunes, feel-good. An audio cure.
Some songs just stimulate my imagination. Makes me think of being crazy drunk and dancing naked in the rain, or looking up on an overcast day to notice that everything just seems to slow down, or being ridiculously happy, putting on a dress and frolicking in a meadow. It leads me to those infinite possibilites and myraid escapisms that are kept ensconces in the back of my head.
For example, I Love Marijuana by Linual Thompson, just reminds me of better times. A subtle reminder of something simple, easy and liberating.
If only life could be that simple...As simple as a piece of music or a walk in the park. Maybe it is?

Crazy Drunk&Dancing Naked [Nov. 9th, 2009|06:01 pm]

sarah_pills
[Current Music |"Summertime Clothes"-Animal Collective]

Sweet summer night and I'm stripped to my sheets
Forehead is leaking, my AC squeaks and
A voice from the clock says, "You're not gonna get tired"
My bed is a pool and the walls are on fire
Soak my head in the sink for a while
Chills on my neck and it makes me smile but
My bones have to move and my skin's gotta breathe
You pick up the phone and I'm so relieved
You slide down your stairs to the heated street
And the sun has left us with slippery feet
And I want to walk around with you
And I want to walk around with you
And be here with you, we're goin'

It doesn't really matter, I'll go where you feel
Hunt for the breeze, get a midnight meal
I point in the windows, you point out the parks
Rip off your sleeves and I'll ditch my socks
We'll dance to the songs from the cars as they pass
Weave through the cardboard, smell that trash
Walking around in our summertime clothes,
Nowhere to go while our bodies glow
And we'll greet the dawn in its morning blues
With purple yawn, you'll be sleeping soon
And I want to walk around with you
And I want to walk around with you

When the sun goes down, we'll go out again
Don't cool off, I like your warmth

Let's leave the sound of the heat for the sound of the rain
It's easy to sleep when it wets my brain
It covers my rest with a saccharine sheen
Kissing the wind through my window screen
The restlessness calls us, that I cannot hide
So much on my mind that it spills outside
Do you want to go stroll down the financial street?
Our clothes might get soaked, but the buildings sleep
And there's no one pushing for a place
As we end up at an easy pace
And I want to walk around with you
And I want to walk around with you
I want to walk around with you
Just you, just you, just you...
